갈매기의 꿈

 

 

".........thousands and thousands of gulls. I know."
Sullivan shook his head.

"알고 있겠지만, 이 세상에는 헤아릴 수 없이 수많은 갈매기들이 있단다."
설리번은 머리를 흔들었다.


"The only answer I can see, Jonathan,
is that you are pretty well a one-in-a-million bird.

"조나단, 내가 분명히 말할 수 있는 것은 자네가 백만 마리 새들 중에서
한 마리 있을까 말까한 아름다운 갈매기라는 것일세.


Most of us came along ever so slowly.
We went from one world into another that was almost exactly like it,
forgetting right away where we had come from,
not caring where we were headed, living for the moment.

우리들의 대부분은 여기까지 오는데 아주 오랜 세월이 걸렸네.
그리고 우리는 지금도 그저 그렇고 그런 하나의 세계에서

그것과 전혀 다를 바 없는 또 다른 세계로 가고 있다네.

우리들은 어디에서 왔으며, 어디를 향해 가야 하는 것인지 알려고 하지도 않은 채
단지 지금 눈앞의 이 순간에 집착하며 살고 있다네.


Do you have any idea how many lives we must have gone
through before we even got the first idea

that there is more to life than eating,
or fighting, or power in the Flock?
A thousand lives, John, ten thousand!

삶을 살아가는 데 있어서 먹고 싸우고 권력이나 쥐려고 하는 것보다
더 중요한 것들이 있다는 생각이 우리에게 처음 떠오를 때까지  
우리가 얼마나 수많은 삶을 겪었어야 했는가를 자네는 상상이나 할 수 있겠나?

조나단, 천 개 만개의 삶을 겪어야 했던 것일세.


And then another hundred lives until we began to learn
that there is such a thing as perfection,
and another hundred again to get the idea that our purpose for living
is to find that perfection and show it forth.

그러고 나서도 다시 백 개의 삶을 겪은 뒤에야
비로소 우리는 어떤 완전한 상태가 존재한다는 것를 배우기 시작했고,
다시 또 백 개의 삶을 겪은 뒤에야
우리의 삶의 목적이 그 완벽함을 찾아내는 것에 있고
그것을 남에게 보여주는 데 있다는 생각이 떠오르게 되는 걸세.


The same rule holds for us now, of course :
we choose our next world through what we learn in this one.
Learn nothing, and the next world is same as this one,
all the same limitations and lead weights to overcome."

그와 똑같은 이치가 지금 우리앞에 주어져 있는 거야.
물론, 우리는 이 세상에서 배운 것을 통해 다음 세상을 선택하게 되는 것일세.
배우는 것이 없으면 다음 세상도 이 세상과 마찬가지로
똑같은 한계들과 극복해야 할 무거운 짐이 있는 세상을 맞이하게 된다는 말일세."
